Identification:

-Distinctive vase-shaped form of mature specimens
-Simple leaf, asymmetrical with prominent veins and a doubly toothed margin, 3-6 inches long
-Small clusters of yellow-green flowers becoming round disc-shaped samara in late winter, early spring

 
Note:   Widely planted as a shade tree in the Northeast and Midwest until Dutch elm disease destroyed a vast majority of the specimens. Although Dutch elm disease has not officially been reported in the lower South, other vascular diseases and soft, weak wood make the American Elm susceptible to wind damage.   Its use as a shade tree is questionable.
